It has been more than 8 years since the Seattle Seahawks infamously threw the game against the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots in Super Bowl 49. But the wound remains unhealed for the Seahawks fans. Many still blame Pete Carroll for the loss as he made a questionable decision to throw the ball at the goal line that led to Russell Wilson getting picked off by the Pats cornerback Malcolm Butler. And now, 8 years after the game, Carroll relived the painful memory with then-Seahawks CB Richard Sherman.
During a recent episode of The Richard Sherman Podcast on The Volume network, Carroll went deep with Sherman on his decision to throw the ball at the 1-yard line despite having Marshawn Lynch in the backfield.
“That play just happened. It wasn’t like by design, it wasn’t — there was no agenda. That play just happened,” Carroll said, before explaining why he decided to throw the ball. “Because I’m always in, make sure that we have a chance to get all four shots.”
Carroll explained that the team decided to throw on the 2nd down since the Patriots had stacked the box with their goal line team. He doesn’t blame the playcalling for the loss and simply looks at it as a once-in-a-lifetime play by the Pats defensive back Malcolm Butler.
“I was rock solid on the philosophy of it. It just was the worst play that ever could’ve happened,” he said. “And the guy [Butler] makes a play of a lifetime — a play of a career for everybody’s career.”
Furthermore, Pete Carroll revealed that the Seahawks players were “mad and pi**ed” at him after the game. “We were hurt,” Richard Sherman clarified. “We were hurt.” If that interception didn’t happen, the Seahawks would’ve likely won their second Super Bowl ring in two years and possibly could’ve started a dynasty. Instead, the Patriots ended up winning the game 28-24 and continued their own dynasty run.

Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson are still chasing their second ring
After losing the Super Bowl 49 game against Tom Brady and the Patriots, the Seahawks haven’t been to a Super Bowl game yet. Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson are still chasing their second ring.
Now, Carroll is still the head coach of the Seahawks and is looking to reach the big game with a new set of talents. On the other hand, Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos during the 2022 off-season.
Wilson had an abysmal outing in 2022. But now, he will have another opportunity to compete for the Lombardi Trophy with his new mentor Sean Payton. Russell and Payton are looking to lead the Broncos to a deep postseason run in the upcoming NFL season.
