The era of Peter King has finally come to an end. The veteran sports journalist and columnist at NBC Sports has decided to rest his pen nearly after three decades. He had a 44-year-long career and his name became synonymous with football.

The veteran achieved a place in the hearts of the people through his popular weekly column “Monday Morning Quarterback” which started in 1997 in the Sports Illustrated. Since then, his writing has become the most popular way of reading football news. In his last column for Pro Football Talk, the veteran sports journalist bid adieu to the world of sports in a charismatic way.

Who’s complaining? Not me. I’m the luckiest man on the face of the earth. To be a long-termer in an increasingly short-term business, to write this column for 27 years and to be a sportswriter for 44, well, that’s something I’ll always be grateful for. Truly, I’ve loved it all.

Taking it further, the sports analyst mentioned that he does not know what is awaiting him in the coming time. This was the reason for him to use an asterisk of “I am retiring.”

I’m retiring*. I use an asterisk because I truly don’t know what the future holds for me. I probably will work at something, but as I write this I have no idea what it will be. Maybe it will be something in the media world, but just not Football Morning in America (nee Monday Morning Quarterback).

In his last column, the 66-year-old cited four reasons for this decision. He claimed that with time he moved away from minute-by-minute coverage. The family that sacrificed a lot for him was also a reason. He wanted to provide more time to the family members.

Fans reacted emotionally after seeing the retirement news of Peter King

Though the sportswriter claimed that he found some interests to follow in his life, fans did not react rationally. King’s column had contributed a lot to making their footballing sense, hence biding farewell became an extremely emotional job.

In his last column, King hinted exhaustion with what he was doing. That was hard to fathom for the fans, who had associated with the writings of the analyst for four and a half decades. Their understanding of football derived from the analysis that the veteran made.
