Every fan wants to know what goes on in his favorite football player’s life. How their lives are different, how they train, how they juggle between their family and the game—these are the recurring curiosities that circle the mind of every football lover. That’s where reality TV and documentaries enter the frame with their behind-the-scenes access to various nooks and crannies of the professional athlete’s life. Peyton Manning had the same idea when he approached Patrick Mahomes to document his life and create the Netflix series ‘Quarterback’.
Manning, a former Broncos player, knows a thing or two about being an elite quarterback himself during his era. He understands the difficulties of playing at the highest level and performing week after week. The quarterbacks are often the targets of the opposition, as they dictate most of the play. While they are the champions on the field, people often want to know how they are at home with their wives and kids.
However, Manning is also aware that filming their lives can be very challenging because it reveals a lot of personal details. “The last thing we wanted to be was a distraction,” said Manning to The New York Post. He then revealed that it was easy to onboard Mahomes. Manning elaborated further, saying, “I could tell that Patrick wanted to do it so his kids would know” who their father is and what he did when they grow up.
When Peyton Manning approached Patrick Mahomes to be part of Quarterback, the Kansas City Chiefs player told him if coach Andy Reid allowed him, he would do it. Manning’s respect for Mahomes increased. “It was telling,” said Manning, describing “the best player” in the NFL who could easily decide for himself and yet wanted Manning “to ask his head coach for permission.”

What can fans expect from Patrick Mahomes-starring Netflix series Quarterback?
The viewers will get to witness firsthand the lives of different quarterbacks at different stages of their careers, unlike Hard Knocks. Besides Patrick Mahomes, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Kirk Cousins and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Marcus Mariota will be featured as well.
While talking about Cousins, Manning revealed that a “lot of it was above and beyond’ what he had hoped for. Cousins is in the twilight of his career and fighting against several injuries. He allowed the crew to film during one of his visits to the psychologist. Although it was not “part of the deal,” Cousins said, “No, it’s OK, I want to have this documented.”
During the filming of the episodes, Mariota was part of the Atlanta set-up and got benched. Meanwhile, his pregnant wife gave birth at the same time. His story carefully wiggles its way around the situation and does its level best not to paint either Mariota or Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith as right or wrong.
Netflix’s ‘Quarterback’ will be an eight-part docuseries that will release on July 12th.
