It’s astonishing how situations can change in just four days. On Monday, the Las Vegas Raiders did not score a single point against the Minnesota Vikings. Cut to Thursday, they blew the Los Angeles Chargers away, dropping 63 to the amazement of owner Mark Davis.
Interim head coach Antonio Pierce‘s side was up by 49 points at the start of the third quarter when quarterback Aidan O’Connell made a big brain play and tossed the pass to Jakobi Meyers. He then found wide receiver partner Davante Adams roaming free in the Chargers end zone.
The Chargers finally managed to sneak a touchdown in as backup quarterback Easton Stick, starting his first-ever NFL game, connected with Joshua Palmer for a 79-yard TD. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to shift the momentum in their favor and conjure up a couple of moves to get back in the game as Raiders John Jenkins gathered up a loose ball following a Chargers fumble and returned it for 44 yards.
All hopes for the Chargers went down the drain when, just a minute into the fourth quarter, Vegas corner Jack Jones completed a one-handed interception from Stick’s pass and ran 16 yards for a pick-6. The fans inside the Allegiant Stadium could not believe what they were witnessing in front of their eyes.
It reflected perfectly when the Amazon Prime camera crew panned towards the VIP suite and showed Mark Davis. The veteran owner’s reactions summed up millions of Raider Nation emotions in one fell swoop.
Can the win over the Chargers convince Mark Davies to appoint Antonio Pierce permanently?
The Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job is one of the hottest positions up for grabs since Mark Davis fired Josh McDaniels. Pierce took over from McDaniels, and since then, the former linebacker coach has won 3 games in 6 outings. That still won’t guarantee his position is secure, considering several names are rumored to be eyeing the position.
According to NFL insiders, former head coach Jon Gruden could make a comeback for the Raiders. Gruden was in charge of Davis’ team when they were still based out of Oakland. He stepped down after four seasons, never managing a single winning record.
That’s still a big if. For now, the Raiders can celebrate an early Christmas dinner. Against the Chargers, there were some massive confidence-boosting performances from some of the key players who needed that the most.
QB O’Connell, who only managed 171 yards in the Minnesota game, broke the losing streak against the Chargers. The rookie completed 20/34 passes for 248 yards and threw four touchdowns. Two of them went to fellow first-year student Tre Tucker, who caught the ball thrice for 59 yards.
All-Pro playmaker Davante Adams finally managed to secure his second 100-yard game since the Steelers game in Week 3. Adams caught the ball eight times for 101 yards and one TD.
With that win, the Raiders are now 6-8 for the season and still have an outside chance of making it to the playoffs. Next, they will travel to Arrowhead to face their fellow AFC West team, the Kansas City Chiefs.
