The San Francisco 49ers traded Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys after it was announced that he would not be the starter or backup quarterback in the upcoming season. According to reports, the Baltimore Ravens were also interested in his services. But their general manager, Eric DeCosta, disagreed.
As per sources, the 49ers met with a few potential partners who had inquired about Lance’s availability. But their alleged outrageous offer did not sit well with John Lynch & Co. One of the other front runners were the Miami Dolphins.
The deadline for which Lance had to be moved on was coming closer, and they had to finalize a 53-man squad. Reportedly, the Baltimore Ravens also took a chance on taking the 23-year-old as their Lamar Jackson backup.
However, Eric DeCosta brushed aside all the fleeting rumors, calling them “bad reporting.” The Ravens GM claimed that they were never in the market for Lance.
“I would say that’s just bad reporting,” DeCosta said, as per Ravens reporter Kyle Pheonix Barber. “If somebody calls you and asks if you’re interested in a player and you say ‘no’ does that mean you’re interested in that player?”
He added that they have a locker room filled with great quarterbacks.“We’ve got good quarterbacks, [and] we love our quarterbacks. We weren’t looking to add any.”

The Lions spoke the same language as Ravens about Trey Lance’s interests

After Lance’s trade saga finally concluded, the Athletic reported that the Detroit Lions were also interested in Trey Lance. Senior NFL writer Dianna Russini tweeted the news.
“The Detroit Lions showed interest, per sources. Most of the early discussions about a trade involved a 6th rounder that could get to a 5th,” she wrote. But in the end, Jerry Jones offered the best deal.
On Friday, during his post-roster cuts press conference, Lions general manager Brad Holmes denied the rumors. He said they never reached out to the 49ers for Lance.
“The Trey Lance thing, in particular, I had never reached out,” Holmes revealed, as per USA Today Sports. “I never actively pursued the player. So I can’t speak to the accuracy of those reports.”
Why would they go for the North Dakota State alumnus in the first place? They recently signed veteran Teddy Bridgewater as Jared Goff‘s backup. Nevertheless, Trey Lance ended up with the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick.
