Throughout Thursday night, things did not go according to plan for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But they could still have won the game, as Baker Mayfield brought out the last resort in his arsenal which ended in a missed pass interference on receiver Chris Godwin.
With only a few seconds left on the clock, Tampa was down 24-18. It was a one-point game, and anyone could steal it. Mayfield launched a Hail Mary towards the Buffalo Bills red zone. For a moment, it felt like the pass would find no one until the ball fell only inches next to second-year playmaker Chris Godwin‘s hands. If Godwin had kept his eyes on the pass and looked up a fraction early, then the scores would be different.
However, that wasn’t meant to be on the day, and the Bills won their fifth match of the season. But the end did not sit well with a section of fans who went back and kept hitting the replay button on the last play. After pausing, rewinding, and viewing the incomplete Mayfield to Godwin pass in slow motion, they found something that they had failed to notice early on.
Social media users complain that the referees missed pass interference on Baker Mayfield’s Haily Mary to Chris Godwin
At first glance, everything seemed normal when Chris Godwin missed the ball on Mayfield’s pass in the dying embers of the game. But upon close inspection, it appeared as though the 27-year-old got turned around by a Bills defender while going for the ball.
Linebacker Terrel Bernard seemed to get hold of Godwin not once but twice in the Bills end zone. First, when he was getting into position, and second, when he was about to reach for the ball.
The referees could have easily thrown a flag to give the Buccaneers an advantage, but it did not happen. Some suggested there should have been multiple yellows on the ground. Tight end Cade Otton got blocked off by a Bills player in the buildup as well.
However, there’s a silver lining. Referees rarely pull back for pass interference on Hail Mary’s. These types of games are filled with a lot of pushing and shoving by players, so figuring out the actual suspect does become hard for the officials. But the game is done and dusted, and the Buccaneers lost their fourth game of the season.
