There were some contentious calls that sparked conversations among observers and fans during the Super Bowl LVIII. The missed holding calls involving the San Francisco 49ers stars Nick Bosa and Fred Warner was one of the main points of contention.
Like most edge rushers, Bosa is frequently held. The official NFL rulebook defines offensive holding as “using his hands or arms to change the defender’s path or angle of pursuit or to materially restrict an opponent.” Whether the blocker’s hands are inside or outside the defender’s body frame, it is still considered a foul.
49ers fans have been so frustrated by these missed calls that some have even suggested the Super Bowl was “rigged.” It’s crucial to remember that officiating in any sport is a difficult job, and referees are fallible human beings. The NFL maintains the highest standards for its officials, and every attempt is made to guarantee impartiality in every game.
The Niners lost the Super Bowl on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a close game that could’ve gone either way, as the missed calls were huge in the context of the game.
However, it was the Chiefs’ night, and they came away with their third Super Bowl in five years and have now successfully established themselves as a dynasty.
