On Sunday, the defending Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs squared off against the Minnesota Vikings in their week 5 matchup. During the game, the referees’ inconsistency in penalty calls led to some controversy on social media. Particularly, one non-call involving the Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed riled up many people on social media.

During the final minutes of the fourth quarter, the Vikings were trailing by 7 points and were facing a crucial 4th down. Kirk Cousins, who received the snap from the shotgun position, heaved up a prayer to rookie Jordan Addison, but the pass was incomplete. During the incompletion, the Chiefs CB L’Jarius Sneed, who was covering Addison, drew a penalty flag for holding, which could’ve given the Vikings an automatic first down.

But surprisingly, after some discussion, the refs picked up the flag declaring that there was no penalty on the play which riled up the Minnesota crowd. However, that wasn’t even the most controversial part of that play. After the refs threw the flag on the field, the Chiefs CB tried to argue with the refs on the field without wearing his helmet, which should’ve been called a penalty.

But the refs instructed Sneed to put on his helmet instead of calling an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on him. According to the NFL rulebook,  “removal of his helmet by a player in the field of play or the end zone during a celebration or demonstration, or during a confrontation with a game official or any other player” will result in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Instead, the refs instructed Sneed to put on his helmet and didn’t call any penalty on him. The clip of Sneed getting instructed to put his helmet on went viral online and led to some conspiracy theories.
