Doug Kyed is an NFL reporter. He covers the New England Patriots for the Boston Herald. Recently, Kyed announced the death of his 2-year-old daughter, Hallie. She was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in April 2023.

In an Instagram post on January 22nd, Kyed revealed that Hallie passed away peacefully in her sleep. This is what he wrote:

Hallie died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning as Jen [his wife] and I held her hands in bed.

Kyed revealed that he and Jen were very fortunate to have Hallie in their lives. Kyed continued:

Hal, my koala baby, my little Hallie Bear, my Sour Patch Kid. She’d yell ‘DADDDDYYY’ at me to take her on a walk around the hospital floor and then give me sweet little pats on the back when I took her out of her crib.

He wrote that his elder daughter, Olivia [6 years old], was fortunate enough to have a baby sister. Hallie had varied interests but loved painting the most, according to Kyed. One of her favorite things to do was “have an assortment of chips” and wear rain boots.

Kyed shared that Hallie’s chemotherapy treatments had stopped working

The toddler was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called ‘Acute Myeloid Leukemia,’ also known as AML. Even though AML is the second most common pediatric blood cancer, it’s still relatively rare. This causes the blood to produce an abnormally high amount of white blood cells.

Due to this, Hallie had a rash and swollen lymph nodes. She was admitted to Boston Children’s Hospital. The doctors initially thought it was an infection and prescribed antibiotics. But later, they began administering chemotherapy. In April last year, Kyed wrote on social media that the rash was still there and noticed some bruising on her legs.

He revealed that Hallie had to go through anesthesia for lumbar punctures or MRIs on several occasions. The doctors also found disease in her eye, for which she took eye drops multiple times a day.

The Kyed family released an ‘In Memorium’ for their little girl. If anyone wants to give flowers, they can do so on January 26. They posted it on Instagram.

According to Dr. Richard Aplenc, a physician-scientist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, there are approximately 500 children a year between the ages of 0 and 14 who are diagnosed with AML. As per Cancer.net, acute myeloid leukemia’s survival rate changes depending on the age of the patients. For a 5-year relative survival rate of 20 years and older, it’s 28%, and for under, it’s 69%.
