The quarterback battle between Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe is heating up in New England. The Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick recently claimed that he has not committed to the Pro Bowl QB Jones as the starting signal-caller. In fact, there were several reports suggesting that the long-time head coach tried to shop Jones to several teams in the 2023 off-season.

And now, the well-renowned NFL reporter Dan Patrick claims that the Patriots’ locker room shows a lot of support to Bailey Zappe, who started two games for them in the 2022 season.

“I do think that locker room is split,” Patrick said in his show on Wednesday. “Somebody who used to play for the Patriots — I asked, ‘Could you find out how that feels in the locker room?’ When he came back to me probably four days later, he said, ‘There’s a lot of support for Bailey Zappe.'”

However, the sportscaster also pointed out that the Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick would not easily give up on his former first-round selection Mac Jones. “But that doesn’t mean they’re ready to turn the team over to Bailey Zappe. Bailey Zappe was a great college quarterback, put up a lot of yards there. But you spent the 15th pick in the first round on Mac Jones. You can’t whiff on that,” said Patrick.

During the 2022 season, Bill Belichick benched their franchise QB Mac Jones in favor of the rookie QB Bailey Zappe. The Western Kentucky product impressed everyone as threw for 781 yards and 5 touchdowns while completing 70.7% of his passes in the 4 games he played.

Belichick went back to Jones as the starting QB but the former Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty recently revealed that the locker room was split between the two talented QBs.

“But the struggles on offense, I think there were some guys in the locker room that were like ‘Let’s go with [Bailey] Zappe.’ Or ‘No, Mac looked good today’,” McCourty said on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show. “It was just a back-and-forth, which to me, spoke more about what we had on offense than the quarterback. We never were solidified as an offensive group that guys had full confidence in anything we were doing. There was never true hope.”

And now, another report suggests that the players were indeed split between the two young QBs. Nevertheless, the battle between two pure packet passers will be interesting to watch in the upcoming months.
