In the 2022 off-season, the desperate Cleveland Browns changed the QB market forever by giving a 5 year $230 million fully guaranteed contract to the controversial QB Deshaun Watson. And now, the Baltimore Ravens QB and the 2-time Pro Bowler Lamar Jackson is allegedly demanding a similar contract as Watson to continue leading their franchise.
According to the senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, the former league MVP Lamar Jackson rejected the Ravens’ $50m per year contract since he wants a fully guaranteed deal.
“Their (Ravens) deal included around 133 million dollars in guaranteed money,” said Flowers in a recent episode of NFL Live on ESPN. “But their overall contract structure was huge. It was gonna pay him among the highest in the league, around 50 million dollars per year, close to it, should be able to make all that money over time. Now Lamar Jackson, who has been in contact with the NFL players union and of course, he’s represented by himself believes that he should get the fully guaranteed deal.”
Furthermore, Flowers went on to say that Jackson stays strong on his stance and hasn’t budged on that. However, he also believes that in the near future, the 26-year-old QB might be willing to lower his demands and come to common ground with the Baltimore-based football team.
Lamar Jackson allegedly seeks Deshaun Watson-like contract
Lamar Jackson, who is one of only two players alongside the Patriots legend Tom Brady to win the MVP award unanimously, is reportedly seeking a fully guaranteed deal exceeding the pay range of the Browns QB Deshaun Watson.
“I was told from the source that Jackson wants in his counter offers to the team, fully guaranteed deals at a higher per year clip than what Deshaun Watson got, which is 46 million dollars a year guaranteed,” said Flowers.
However, one NFL executive points out that the Ravens might not be desperate as the Browns to throw all their money at the quarterback. “Just because the Browns were desperate doesn’t mean that the Ravens are,” one high-ranking NFL executive said according to ESPN. “They are a stable franchise. They aren’t about to jump at something just because Cleveland did it.”
Only time will tell how things play out in Baltimore, but one thing is clear, that is, the Cleveland Browns, a dysfunctional franchise, has officially ruined the QB market. And now as a result, even guys like Daniel Jones are asking for a contract in the pay grade of the top-tier QBs like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.
