The Denver Broncos continue to fail in their attempt to live up to the hype that has been expected of them for the past two seasons. From what began as a team that was a guaranteed contender to make the Super Bowl, the Broncos have now become a team whose fanbase would be grateful if they are able to make it to the playoffs.

The team has lost 5 games this season and has won just 1 out of the 6 that they have played so far. The sole win came against the Chicago Bears, so it does not really classify as a genuine win.

With the arrival of new Head Coach Sean Payton, things were meant to change and be different this time around but they appear to have gotten worse. While QB Russell Wilson has actually been playing pretty good football this year, it is the defense that has been letting the team down. Considering this, it comes as no shock that the Denver Broncos are considering firing their current Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph.

Pat McAfee of ESPN, has heard “rumblings” about the organization’s decision to fire their DC and replace him with a face that is all too familiar for viewers of ESPN.

Rex Ryan could be the new defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos

The replacement for Joseph is expected to be none other than Rex Ryan, the former HC of the New York Jets from 2009-14. He has had experience being a defensive coordinator before as he was the brain behind the Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl winning defense back in 2001. Now, fans see Rex frequently on ESPN as he has taken the role of an analyst.

This whole fiasco sounds eerily similar to the situation surrounding the Indianapolis Colts last season. The team’s HC gets fired mid-season and owner Jim Irsay calls upon ESPN’s Jeff Saturday to come and take the position. There will be no issue as long as Ryan gets the job done.

On this matter, Pat McAfee said, “That name has been on the radar for a potential return to defensive coordinating, and potentially to the Denver Broncos, allegedly.” Keep in mind that this is a rumor, this is not a sure thing, as Pat has emphasized, “This is not from anybody within ESPN. This is just what people are hearing around the league.”

What’s in this for Rex Ryan? Well, it has been a long time since he was on the sidelines of an NFL game in a coaching position. If he intends to make a return, he would have to start somewhere and the role of a coordinator sounds perfect.

Keep in mind that Rex Ryan was already interviewed by Head Coach Sean Payton before the commencement of this season but at the time, Payton believed Vance Joseph was his man. However, that decision is one that he regrets making.

Rex Ryan clearly sees potential in this defense. Following the annihilation of the Broncos by the Dolphins in Week 3, he had stated that this defense had the potential to be a top-five in the NFL if they just had the right guy running it. Maybe Rex was referring to himself and taking subtle shots at Sean Payton for his decision.
