“I would have been cut”: Former Patriots OL Rich Ohrnberger risked his life by bumping into a car to avoid being cut by Bill Belichick
Bill Belichick and Rich Ohrnberger
New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick is a rather intimidating figure, his coaching style without a shadow of doubt yields results and has helped the Pats etch their names into the history books but even during his career highs, he seems to have trouble expressing emotions of any sort. Bill is known for his poker face, no matter what he responds like a robot and is brutally honest, it comes as no surprise that it is not just the public and media who are afraid of him, his players are terrified of him.
Belichick has inculcated the ‘Patriot way’ in New England. This philosophy has players doing their job and staying accountable to themselves. Life as a Patriot is essentially like enrolling yourself into a military camp as you have to be on your best behavior and remain the most disciplined and punctual player. With all of this being said, it comes as no surprise that one former player was so afraid of being late to a practice session that he essentially risked getting into a severe accident just so that he would not be cut.

“I had this sinking feeling in my stomach”: Rich Ohrnberger KNEW he had to make it on time to practice if he wanted to remain a Patriot
Rich Ohrnberger, the former offensive lineman for the New England Patriots, was extremely afraid of being cut by Belichick so much so that he once intentionally hit a van on his way to practice after he was late to a team meeting. Ohrnberger appeared on The Hartman and Rich O Show and confessed that he got ended up rear-ending a van just so that he would not have to face an angry Bill.
“I was driving a Chevy Tahoe, and it says I’m already late, I’m like 5 minutes to being officially late, and I’ve got a 15-minute drive ahead of me,” the player revealed that he was extremely anxious about what his HC would do.
“I had this sinking feeling in my stomach, I kept thinking I’m gonna get cut. I’m cruising down this slight sloping hill that brings you to the first traffic light, I have to turn right to get to the stadium for the morning meeting,” Rich goes on to add making us all feel glad that we do not have a Bill Belichick in our lives.
“I see a church van in front of me that’s all dinged up, and it’s got the black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, and I’m just like, ‘I’m gonna hit this car.’,” Rich concludes. And he did hit the car and ended up being late to practice with a banged-up car, well hopefully that got him out of hearing it from Bill.
On the unfortunate side, Ohrnberger had ended up hitting the van with an old man inside, however, he did not sustain any injuries and the van was also not damaged. The lengths one has to go to, to keep Bill Belichick satisfied is ridiculous. It does make you wonder how Tom Brady spent over 2 decades playing for the man. Bill could be harsh on his players but the man knows how to win, and that is all that matters in the NFL.
