The New England Patriots head coach, Bill Belichick, is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches ever. A six-time Super Bowl champion, Belichick has been at the help of the Patriots’ dynasty for more than 15 years. The team is in a bit of a rebuild since QB Tom Brady left the team for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Recently, the Patriots released both their backup QBs, Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham. It was a strange move to let go of both the backups and be left with only the starting QB, Mac Jones. There were questions about this move, but Belichick got the benefit of the doubt, considering his track record. However, former NFL player and current NFL analyst Richard Sherman thinks otherwise.
Sherman criticized the legendary coach on his show, Undisputed on Fox Sports. “When Belichick does something crazy that we would say is crazy when other coaches do it — like if Kyle Shanahan took his defensive coordinator and made him his offensive coordinator, or made his special teams coach his quarterbacks coach, you would say ‘what are you doing? You’ve lost your mind.'” Sherman said on the show.
He further noted that Belichick had struggled post-Tom Brady to lead the Pats. “He has been .500 since Tom Left. You judged Tom when he left, you said if he can’t win without Belichick, then it was belichick. And what did Brady do? He won a Super Bowl the first season that he left.”
Belichick made Matt Patricia his offensive coordinator last season, despite him serving as the team’s defensive coordinator for years before that. It went terribly, and Patricia was released as the team’s offensive playcaller. Sherman believes that Belichick gets away with a lot of criticism because of his status in the game. The Pats begin their season against the defending NFC Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Richard Sherman opens up about loss to the Chiefs and Mahomes in Super Bowl LIV
Richard Sherman is a fiery character. He is never shy of voicing his opinions, however controversial they might be. After joining the Fox Sports show Undisputed, he has been giving his opinions on a daily basis. He recently discussed Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and Super Bowl LIV.
“You had to show me clips of a Super Bowl that breaks my heart to this day because that man [Mahomes] gunned, seven minutes to go in the game we’re up 10, he went, I want to say 20 unanswered points,” Sherman said on the show. He was part of the San Francisco 49ers team that lost Super Bowl LIV against the Chiefs.
He further praised his then QB Jimmy Garoppolo, saying, “Our quarterback didn’t play defense. We had the number one defense in the land that year, I did not play well. He [Garoppolo] went out there, and he threw strikes, he threw strikes, he ran the ball well, he executed well.”
Sherman is a Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks. He is considered one of the best DBs of his generation and was part of the ‘Legion of Boom’ defense in Seattle. Since retiring from the game, he has become an analyst and appears on the Undisputed Show on Fox Sports.
