The Duke Blue Devils led by their star quarterback Riley Leonard caused a major upset as they defeated the number 9 ranked Clemson Tigers in a dominant fashion. Leonard continued his good 2022 form and had a solid outing against the rough and tough Tigers’ defense. That could be because of the weird motivation he received from his mom Heather before the game.

Riley Leonard became the talk of social media after his “You suck” bracelet went viral before the game. According to ESPN commentators, the 2 words in the bracelet are what Leonard’s mom Heather sends him before every game to “keep his ego in check.” The commentators claimed Riley asked his mom to do that as a motivation.

Riley told ESPN that he has never received this kind of attention and that message will help him keep his ego down. Well, it worked very well in favor of Leonard and the Duke football team. They secured one of the biggest victories in the program’s history on Monday as they defeated the number 9 ranked Clemson 28-7. Following the big victory, Duke fans stormed the field of Wallace Wade Stadium and celebrated with the players.

This is Duke’s first victory against an AP Top 10 college football team in more than 3 decades. The last time they defeated a Top 10 ranked opponent was 34 years ago when they defeated the number 7 ranked Clemson Tigers back in 1989. As for Dabo Swinney‘s Clemson, their college football playoff hopes are likely finished following this humiliating loss.
