The New England Patriots had one of their worst seasons in the last two decades. The AFC powerhouse had its second losing season in three years with an 8-9 record. This news seems to have brought trouble to Foxboro for the head coach and the quarterback.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that Bill Belichick went shopping for Mac Jones this offseason. He tried talking with teams to trade Jones giving rise to a broken relationship between the two. As per Pro Football Talk, Belichick talked with the Raiders, Texans, Buccaneers, and Commanders about a possible trade.

Despite there being multiple reports of the team trading away their quarterback, former Patriots great Rob Gronkowski believes the reports are anything but true. During his latest appearance on FanDuel TV’s Up & Adams show, he said, “I think that was fake news. There was just too much turnover this year.

“[Belichick] already got a new offensive coordinator [and quarterbacks coach Bill O’Brien] that he brought into place. Just the whole offensive staff was basically turned over this year, and then if you’re shipping your quarterback … that’s just too much turnover to have in the NFL in one season and to be able to compete the following year.”

Rob Gronkowski did point out that if Mac Jones is unable to deliver a successful postseason with a real offensive coordinator in Bill O’Brien then there is a possibility that the Patriots ship him away and added “But I don’t think that was true over this offseason so far, and I gotta stamp that as fake news.”

Mac Jones needs to deliver a winning season in 2023

Mac Jones was selected 15th overall in the 2021 NFL draft by the Patriots. Jones tasted success in his rookie season as he went 10-7 and led the Patriots to the playoffs. He earned Pro Bowl honors during his first season and was the best quarterback of his draft class.

However, things went south immediately for Mac Jones and the Patriots in the following season. Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels joined the Raiders as their new head coach and Matt Patricia was left to call offensive plays for the entire season which was not an easy task given he is a defensive expert.

While the current news of Bill Belichick shopping the young quarterback has been called fake by Gronk, Mac Jones is still on the hot seat. Owner Robert Kraft made it very clear in his recent interview that the team needs to have a playoff win in the 2023 season. If Jones is unable to deliver then as Gronk said Jones being traded will be a real “possibility.”

Let’s see whether Mac Jones can deliver wins or not in the coming season!
