“It’s status quo”: Buccaneers’ knowledge of Rob Gronkowski’s availability hints that the TE may have played his last NFL game

Tom Brady

Tom Brady is back for another season after announcing his retirement just 40 days earlier, he is not the first player in the NFL to do such a thing as his go-to target Rob Gronkowski had done the same thing before he decided to join the Buccaneers. Gronk took a year off before joining Brady in his move to Tampa. However, now the Hall of Fame TE’s future remains uncertain.

At the time of retiring, Gronk justified his decision by citing mental health reasons and the toll that playing in the NFL had taken on his body. Gronkowski has undergone multiple surgeries, all major ones and since his position is such that he has to take the hardest hits, his risk of exposure to getting injured was always the highest. Especially in New England, where he was the main target and all DBs did their best to cover him and stop him by any means necessary. However, as he got to Tampa, he was not the only weapon in that offense anymore.

This year Tom Brady announced that he is back for another season, however, the Robin to his Batman remains silent on what his future move will be. Analysts believed that Gronk will retire as soon as Brady hangs it up as well, however, since he knows TB12 better than anyone, he kept mum when Brady first announced his retirement.

Now that Brady has unretired, it remains to be seen what Gronkowski’s future move will be. Last season Gronk played a total of 12 games and was targeted 89 times with 55 receptions, 802 yards in receiving total, and 6 TDs. Not the best season by any means, however, he did miss a couple of games due to injuries that hampered his ability to play at full capacity.

The offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Todd Bowles was asked by reporters about the status of Gronk’s future, “It’s status quo,” he said and added that the team is not clear on when the tight end will make a decision. However, the team is giving him full liberty and all the time he needs in order to make the best decision for himself.

It will be interesting to see what Gronk decides to do, in all likelihood, he will return this year all hints indicate that Tom Brady is pushing for one final Super Bowl run, and he would hate to not be a part of that. It is either that or he will go back into retirement but the odds of him going to another team is very low as Gronk has played with TB12 his entire career and at this juncture, he is unlikely to want to change that fact.
