“Kill ‘em with kindness,” Robert Griffin III appreciates Dolphins Mike McDaniel for showing Broncos mercy in NFL record pursuit even though the team snubbed him for HC Interview years back

Robert Griffin III has digested a fair share of defeats during his NFL days. But the Miami Dolphins 70-20 blowout of the Denver Broncos was a tad surprising, even for the retired football player turned analyst. He congratulated Phins head coach Mike McDaniel for not extending the humiliation for the Mile High team.
The Broncos were one of the franchises with a 100% winless streak this season. While they weren’t the bookmakers’ favorites, nobody expected them to give such an awful performance. But they were up against a Miami Dolphins team that is favorite to win the AFC, and it showed why.
Under head coach Mike McDaniel (often regarded as an offensive-minded coach), the Dolphins reached the Wild Card last season. That too without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa due to his injuries most of the season. This time around, they are sticking to their guns, and so far, they have 3 from 3 on the win counter, after yesterday.
The game in Denver was a special occasion for local Colorado boy Mike McDaniel. The 40-year-old used to be a ball boy for the Broncos back in the day and later interned as a coach at their facility under Mike Shanahan.
Before taking on the Miami job, McDaniel reportedly tried his luck for the vacant Broncos coaching position in 2022. However, he had to face rejection, and on Sunday, he returned as the opposition playcaller.
His red-hot team put 70 points past the Denver franchise and was only two short of breaking the Washington Redskins (now Commanders) 1966 record against the New York Giants (72-41). But McDaniel called for three runs up the middle to make it fourth down. Instead of taking a field goal, he chose to kneel off time.
Former Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III only had respect for McDaniel for choosing to end the game with 70 points. “The Denver Broncos didn’t respect Mike McDaniel enough to give him an interview for their head coaching vacancy,” he shared on X. “But he respected them enough to not kick a field goal to set the all-time record for points in an NFL game. That’s how you kill ‘em with kindness.”

Mike McDaniel wasn’t thinking about the record
Football is about who is the top dawg in the league. And sometimes teams go to extreme lengths to prove that point. Humiliating the opponents is one such way to stamp dominance. But McDaniel showed humility by sparing the Denver Broncos more misery than they already have.
“[The game] felt like chasing points and chasing a record,” Mike McDaniel told the press, as per NBC Sports Josh Alper. “That’s not what we came to the game to do, and that doesn’t have a bearing on the overall season outcome.”
At the end of the post-match interview, he said that he would rather not be greedy by chasing after points, as it’s not good karma. McDaniel emphasized that he only wants to generate good karma for the Miami Dolphins. He will require all the good luck as they travel to the Big Apple to face the Buffalo Bills.
