“He’s seen the worst of the worst!” Jets HC Robert Saleh continues to back Zach Wilson despite knowing Aaron Rodgers will soon be fit enough to become the starting QB

The New York Jets could not have hoped for a worse way for this season to go on. From game 1, the team was doomed after Aaron Rodgers ruptured his Achilles in the opening minutes of their season campaign. Zach Wilson, who was expected to sit out and observe Rodgers the entire year, got his job as the team’s starting QB back and has since made the most out of his role.
While Zach Wilson is no Aaron Rodgers, he does deserve credit for having improved significantly in comparison to last season. He is not just better on the field, but he is beginning to gain respect in the locker room and as a leader.
Head Coach Robert Saleh has remained adamant on his stance that Zach Wilson is the man. Even when Rodgers was meant to be the undisputed starter, Saleh insisted that Wilson’s time will come and he will shine when it does. The HC, in this time of adversity, has continued to embrace his QB.
He had this to say regarding his young QB: “I think Zach Wilson is a different guy, period. I don’t think you can shake Zach. He’s been through so much, I think he’s seen the worst of the worst. There’s nothing that will get him off this train that he’s on right now. Is he where he wants to be? No. Is he going where he knows he can go? I think so, and I think he’s got that confidence.”
Robert Saleh is impressed with Zach Wilson’s prowess
Saleh acknowledges that Zach still has a lot of improvement to do, however, he credits the QB for having improved. To him, this is a quality that is worthy of being respected.
He goes on to add, “He knows we’re freaking close on offense, and he’s got so much confidence. I was going through some plays with him this morning, and he knows it. Things he can do better, things that his teammates can do better, he’s recognizing it and holding himself accountable and starting to look inward.
“He’s looking for answers, and he’s making incremental steps. I know everyone wants them to be leaps, but he’s getting better and he’s taking care of the football,” Saleh continued.
Zach’s biggest criticisms last season were interceptions and his attitude. In the 9 games that he played last season, he was able to throw 6 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. This season, he has 4 TDs and 5 INTs 6 games into the season.
Just like HC Saleh said, the improvement is going to happen in steps, not in big leaps. His attitude appears to have taken a huge leap forward, however. The quarterback appears to be a better teammate this year and more than that; he is taking accountability, which was an issue last season.
Saleh concluded by stating, “You’re not seeing the things that we saw a year ago, and I think as he continues to get better, this team will also get better.” All of this makes sense and would be great except for the fact that the Jets are not exactly his team.
The moment Aaron Rodgers is good to go, Zach Wilson will end up right back on the bench and while that may sound crude, that is the harsh truth. Jets fans would inevitably pick Rodgers rather than bet over the potential of Wilson.
Robert Saleh understands that Wilson has been thrust into an unfavorable situation and is attempting to make the best out of it, and he is doing pretty well. But, he cannot for a second believe that Wilson is the piece with whom this team will make or win the Super Bowl in the near future because if he did, then Rodgers would not be here.
