The New York Jets have suddenly turned into strong division contenders after signing one of the best QBs of all time. HC Robert Saleh feels highly optimistic about the team and is taking precarious decisions to move the team forward.
One of these decisions was declining the 5th year option on rookie OT Mekhi Becton. Becton is a 6-foot-7 strong offensive tackle who was drafted by the Jets in 2020. However, since then, Becton has failed to provide a lasting impact on the team due to several knee injuries.
Recently, the young OT decided to put out his frustration on Twitter and posted a controversial tweet. “I. AM. A. LEFT. TACKLE!!!,” Mekhi Becton stated in the tweet. The tweet was later deleted by the OT, but the impact was done. Jets HC Robert Saleh recently spoke about the competition for the tightly contested OT spot and believes that he’s going to play his best 5 and will have no favorites.
Saleh was recently asked about Becton’s deleted tweet and he had a furious answer for the youngster currently struggling in the league. “Go earn the left tackle,” Robert Saleh stated. “Competition.”
The Jets HC means serious business according to the signings the team has made this season. Therefore, no one has been awarded any freebies and everyone will have to fight for the spot.
Robert Saleh declined the 5th-year option for Mekhi Becton
Mekhi Becton is a strong physical OT, however, HC Robert Saleh is still unsure about his future with the Jets. The young OT has just played 14 games since joining the New York-based team.
The Jets and Saleh recently declined the 5th year option for the Becton as he is not experienced enough to protect the blindside of Aaron Rodgers who just arrived from the Green Bay Packers. Becton is looking at serious competition for the left tackle position and is preparing for a comeback next season.
Saleh was also optimistic about his growth and had positive things to say about his improvement and time with the Jets. “He looks good,” Robert Saleh said. “He looks fantastic, really. But I don’t know. That’s probably more of a question for him. I don’t get into the whole business part of it. Just find a way to get better every day. He’s attacking this offseason the right way, and I’m excited for him.”
If Mekhi Becton wished to be a part of the Jets for many years to come, then he will have to prove himself in the offseason this year and protect Rodgers with ultimate skill and determination.
