On Sunday, Zach Wilson and the New York Jets got battered by the Los Angeles Chargers in their week 9 matchup. The Jets suffered a 27-6 loss and fell to 4-4 in the ongoing season. Following the game, head coach Robert Saleh supported his quarterback Wilson and called the loss a result of a collective team effort.
However, when Saleh appeared on ESPN’s The Michael Kay Show on Tuesday, he was stunned by the criticism of quarterback Zach Wilson by the show host Michael Kay. In the episode, Kay asked why Saleh isn’t giving the second-stringer Trevor Siemian a chance since Wilson has failed to solidify his position. Saleh was left searching for words despite acknowledging the question as a fair one.
I don’t know… you got me I’m going to plead the 5th on all this one.Saleh on The Michael Kay Show.
The 3rd year head coach went on to say that he has to make the best decision possible for the team and look at it from a global standpoint. Which probably means, he has to look at it from every coach’s perspective.
I’ve got to look at it from a global standpoint and just see where we are. and look at the all-22 [film] the best I can and make the decision as best as possible.
Now, Zach Wilson is the best choice available for the Jets since they failed to make any moves ahead of the trade deadline. But Robert Saleh being hesitant to say that to the media has fans questioning whether Wilson being the starting QB is really his choice or not.
Robert Saleh is not looking to make any changes at the quarterback position
There have been rumors in recent times that the Jets would be looking to make some changes at the quarterback position by benching Zach Wilson in favor of the second-stringer Trevor Siemian.
But during his Tuesday appearance on ESPN’s The Michael Kay Show, the Jets head coach Robert Saleh clarified that he hasn’t even thought about starting Siemian over Wilson, despite the team’s offensive woes.
Saleh has been shielding Wilson from criticism for a couple of years now. But he might soon get tired of it and bench Wilson again if the former second-overall pick doesn’t turn around his campaign.
The Jets currently have a solid 4-4 record and are well in the hunt for a playoff spot. Next, they will look to improve their record by defeating the Las Vegas Raiders, who the Jets are scheduled to face this weekend in their week 10 matchup.
