Ron Rivera and the Washington Commanders can bid farewell to all the playoff hopes that they had for this season as they lost a must-win game to the Browns this week. The Washington-based team is firmly out of the playoffs race as the Packers got a win against the Vikings in an exhilarating affair.
Rivera has been the HC of the Commanders for three years now. Therefore, it came as a surprise to everyone when the HC was clueless about the Commanders’ playoff situation in the press conference.
The Commanders needed to guarantee a win against the Browns for a spot in the playoffs. However, they lost the game and Rivera wasn’t aware of the threat of being out of playoff contention this season.
The 60-year-old HC made an ambitious change as he replaced QB Taylor Heinicke with QB Carson Wentz in the most important game of the season for the Commanders. Rivera was asked about the same in the post-game presser and the Commanders’ HC had an ambiguous answer that puzzled all the reporters gathered in the room.
The former Bears coach was asked about the QB strategy for week 18 if the Commanders were eliminated. Rivers thought about the question for a moment and replied “We can be eliminated?” The insane reaction by Rivera was met with great scrutiny on social media as everyone called for the veteran HC to be fired for not knowing about the team’s playoff conditions.

However, the HC later clarified the situation by stating that he was frustrated by the loss and didn’t even think about the consequences of losing, as winning was the only option available to them.
Nonetheless, the Commanders will have to try again next season for the playoffs. Although, many on NFL Twitter believe that the HC should be fired for being ignorant about a crucial piece of information.
