The wait is finally over! NFL season is back on! On Thursday, the 2023 season opened with a much up between the defending Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions. The Chiefs have started the season in a shaky way since they are missing some good talents including their star tight end Travis Kelce and defensive lineman Chris Jones. However, their rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice made up for the missing talent by catching his first of many touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes.
During the second quarter of the game, the Chiefs were trailing by 7 points and were facing a 3rd and goal inside the Detroit five-yard line. Mahomes received the ball from the shotgun position. He then scrambled all the way back to the 12-yard line and threw a perfect pass to the 2023 second-round draft pick Rashee Rice, who completed the catch for the Chiefs’ first touchdown of the 2023 campaign. Check out the footage attached below!
Mahomes also threw another touchdown to tight end Blake Bell. But his interception, which turned into a touchdown helped the Lions to tie the game at 14 points each through three quarters. As for now, Patrick Mahomes has thrown for 181 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
He has also carried the rock 5 times for 36 yards. Kansas City’s rookie receiver Rashee Rice has 3 receptions for 29 yards and 1 touchdown while averaging 9.7 yards per attempt.
Patrick Mahomes playing without any help
The Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is playing without any help in the offense. Currently, his leading receiver is Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who has caught 2 passes from Mahomes for 48 yards.
Mahomes is missing his favorite target Travis Kelce but has still managed to have a great game. He has one interception in the game, which came off a deflection from his receiver.
Apart from the receiving game, he hasn’t had any help in the ground game either. Mahomes is leading the Chiefs in rushing yards with 36 yards and the next best rusher is the Chiefs’ Isiah Pacheco, who has 20 rushing yards in 7 attempts while averaging 2.9 yards per attempt.
However, the Chiefs’ defense has played in the game despite missing the star pass rusher Chris Jones. They have managed to keep the Chiefs in the game, while Mahomes is trying his best with little help from his offensive unit.
