Russell Wilson‘s tenure with the Denver Broncos is likely to be in the final stages after they benched the veteran quarterback. It was always going to be a day-to-day venture between him and head coach Sean Payton.

When Payton takes a liking to someone, he goes to heaven and earth to bring the best out of them. Unfortunately, he and Wilson got off on the wrong foot from the start. From taking digs at the 35-year-old’s lack of professionalism to shouting at him during game days, it was becoming a frequent occurrence for the pair.

The Broncos are trying to play safe. By benching Wilson, they will likely avoid triggering the clause in his contract that will allow the nine-time Pro Bowler to guarantee $37 million if he suffers a long-term injury in Weeks 17 or 18.

Yes, he will miss both remaining games against the Los Angeles Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders, not just the upcoming week. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the move concerns the 2025 salary.

Wilson signed a massive $242.6 million contract extension that will officially go into effect next year. If the Broncos choose to part ways, they would face a massive hit of $85 million in dead money split over the next two years.

5th-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham will start for the Mile High franchise in those two games. And if the reports are true, then he might even be the starter for the Broncos, depending on whether they qualify for postseason football. That’s massive if, as the New York Times predicts, they only have a 6% chance.

It’s a big blow for Wilson personally because this news came out of nowhere. Yet he is not ready to be downed by the setback.

God’s got me. I'm looking forward to what’s next.

Moving on from Russell Wilson won’t be easy

Besides the outrageous dead-cap hit for the Broncos, they aren’t exactly in the best position to land a quality rookie quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. Payton’s team is currently in the 14th spot with a 7-8 record, sandwiched between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Minnesota Vikings. Two sides would be in the hunt for a quarterback.

It wouldn’t have been a massive talking point if Denver hadn’t given Russell Wilson that contract. On top of that, it costs them a lot more than money. They traded multiple draft picks to the Seattle Seahawks to acquire the services of the Super Bowl winners.

Dew Lock went in the opposite direction in the deal. And that’s not all; they missed the chance of having tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, and edge rusher Boye Mafe.

They also missed out on the chance to sign cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who is one of the candidates for the Defensive Rookie of the Season award. Wilson’s deal could go down as one of the biggest busts in recent NFL history.
