The Denver Broncos have a new coach this year. After a disastrous 2022 season, the Broncos fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett and hired former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton. Quarterback Russell Wilson will be hoping to have a bounce back year this season with a proven head coach in Payton.
In an interview with Kay Adams on her show Up & Adams, Wilson opened up about his relationship with his new coach. “Well we’ve gotten actually very close. Over the years, you know, we’ve admired each other but also been around each other.” Wilson told Adams. “We’ve played each other a bunch on the other sides, competed against each other. But then at the same time we went to the pro bowl and that’s when we really got to know each other.”
Wilson said that the best thing about his new coach is he is very clear and knows what he wants. “He has a swagger to him. He has that confidence, and the biggest thing is he’s done it.”
Wilson and Payton seem to be very close but it hasn’t translated on to the field yet. The Broncos have lost both their preseason games. Payton claimed that he saw a lot of progress in the second preseason game and was encouraged by their run game. Wilson and the Broncos open their season on September 10 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Can Russell Wilson bounce back after a disappointing last season?
There is a lot of negative sentiment around the Denver Broncos’ starting QB Russell Wilson after last season. Wilson had his worst season in terms of QB rating last season and will start this season under a new head coach. Doubts started to creep in about his ability to lead a good Broncos team to the playoffs.
Wilson will play under Sean Payton this season. The Super Bowl winning coach spent most of his coaching career in New Orleans where he coached one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time Drew Brees. He will hope to work the same magic in Denver as he did in New Orleans.
According to Payton, Wilson looked sharp during his only drive against the San Francisco 49ers in Broncos’ second preseason game. The Broncos have lost both their preseason games so far and will look to end that little streak on August 27 in their final preseason game. Only time will tell if Wilson can turn back the clock to his Seattle days, but the early signs suggest it will be a difficult task.
