The Denver Broncos hired HC Sean Payton to replace Nathaniel Hackett after a disastrous 2022 season. Hackett was booted out of Denver after just one season and in came Payton, the former New Orleans Saints Super Bowl-winning coach. The main responsibility of Payton heading into the 2023 season was to bring the best out of a 34-year-old quarterback in Russell Wilson. Fast forward to Sunday and the Broncos are 0-2 with their second loss coming against the Washington Commanders.
Although they started the season with a loss against the Las Vegas Raiders, there was optimism as the team and Wilson looked way better than they did at any point during the 2022 season. They came into yesterday’s game as favorites against the Commanders. The Broncos took an early 18-point lead and it looked like they will get their first win of the season. However, a spirited Commanders’ comeback resulted in the Broncos losing the game late in the fourth quarter.
Trailing by 8 points with mere seconds left in the fourth quarter, Wilson heaved a Hail Mary into the endzone from the 50-yard line. It looked like it would be an incomplete pass, but after some juggling acts from players of both sides, the ball somehow ended up in the hands of Broncos’ WR Brandon Johnson for a touchdown. The Broncos now had to convert the two-point attempt to tie the game and send it to overtime. Wilson and company, however, failed to do so and the game ended with the Commanders claiming victory.
Fans of the Broncos had their hearts in their mouths for that entire period. They went from experiencing peak joy to agonizing pain in the span of seconds. Die-hard Broncos fan and the owner of the ThatsGoodSports YouTube channel, Brandon Perna, reacted to the game and went through all the emotions. The Broncos have now lost both their games late in the fourth quarter. They could have started their season 2-0, instead, they are staring at the barrel of a 0-2 hole and it will be tough to recover from this painful loss.
Wilson has looked good in both games, though. He and the Broncos will hope to get a win as quickly as possible to keep their playoff hopes alive. They are in a tough division and it will be difficult to get to the playoffs if they lose their next game as well. The Broncos will visit Miami to play the Miami Dolphins next Sunday. It will be a tough matchup for the Denver-based team.
Sean Payton holds Russell Wilson accountable for the Broncos loss to the Commanders
The Denver Broncos entered the 2023 NFL season with a lot of intrigue surrounding them. They replaced former HC Nathaniel Hackett with Super Bowl-winning head coach Sean Payton. However, the team has started poorly again this season as they find themselves in a 0-2 hole after two weeks.

Payton, after the team’s week 2 loss to the Washington Commanders, held his star quarterback accountable for the loss. “There were a number of drives where we were late with personnel, getting out of the huddle, we took a while,” Payton said during the post-game interview. “That has to change. We had to burn timeouts in the first half, and I’m not used to doing [that]. We have to be better. I have to be better. ‘Russ’ [Wilson] has to be sharper with getting the play out, and then we have to look at how much we have in. If we need to wristband it, we will.”
Wilson finished the game with 308 yards passing with three touchdowns, but he also had two costly turnovers which resulted in the Broncos blowing a 21-3 lead to the Commanders. Wilson became the first QB in NFL history to have 5,000 rushing yards and 40,000 passing yards. He and the Broncos will hope to get their first win against the Miami Dolphins on September 24.
