Ryan Leaf and Zach Wilson may not be so different after all. The two quarterbacks were both drafted second overall in the NFL Draft. Ryan Leaf ultimately had a problematic record as he had undergone substance struggles and was incarcerated for burglary. In a recent interview with The New York Post, Leaf had some words of wisdom for Zach Wilson.
Here’s what Leaf had to say, “Right now, it’s gonna be all about action, no more talking about anything. If anyone wants to talk to him, just say, ‘When I’ve figured it out and I’m a decent quarterback, then I’ll talk,’ There’s nothing he can say that’s going to change the minds of anybody right now- he’s got to go out and perform.”
The only way forward for Zach Wilson should be to concentrate on giving his best and taking advantage of every opportunity that he gets. The time for talking about a big game is over. From this point, it will be all about action. Wilson faces more pressure to perform as he is a top-three draft pick and as a result, the expectations on the player are already high.
Ryan Leaf wants Zach Wilson to get serious
“Hopefully, he ends up in a place where he has the chance to be a starter again, but this just weighs like an anchor. It just does. Unfortunately, you don’t get many second chances to start when you’re a top-three drafted quarterback. You might get to back up somewhere else,” Leaf stated.
Zach Wilson has had a rough year after he lost his starter role over his struggles on the field and his leadership style. The turning point was during the press conference after the New York Jets’ horrific loss to the New England Patriots. Wilson had a bad game but claimed he had not let the defense down.
Ryan Leaf spoke about the best situation that would be suitable for Zach Wilson. “I would love to see him kind of do what Mitchell Trubisky did and go to a place where you’ve got an established star in Josh Allen, and you’re a backup, and you kind of learn how to do it, and then you’ve got an opportunity to go somewhere else and be a starter again like Mitchell did in Pittsburgh.”
Leaf views the Chiefs as an ideal destination to go for Wilson. With a great quarterback like Patrick Mahomes and an amazing coach in Andy Reid.“Zach was the second overall pick, struggled, and is getting hit with a lot of the B-U-S-T word. It would be a perfect opportunity for someone like that to reach out, but he hasn’t. I get it. Because I had opportunities like that too…I want him to be as successful as he can be,” Leaf stated.
Leaf stated that he regrets having his pride and ego negatively affecting his career in the NFL. He had an opportunity to be coached by Tony Dungy as a backup for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ryan Leaf hopes Zach Wilson will not make the same mistakes he did and will make use of every opportunity that comes his way.
