“I’m not a rookie!” Saints QB Derek Carr ‘very confident’ entering his first year with New Orleans as they take on the Titans in week 1
Carr claims that experiences have made him the player that he is today, and aims to go the distance with the Saints.

Derek Carr has always been an overlooked figure when someone brings up the talk of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. But he aims to change that perception of himself as he starts afresh with the New Orleans Saints.
His former side, the Las Vegas Raiders, basically gave up on him despite being the franchise’s all-time leader in games (142), passing yards (35,222), and passing touchdowns (217). Since his second-round pick back in 2014, Carr has constantly thrown for more than 3,500 yards every season (except his rookie year and in 2017).
Now in New Orleans, the four-time Pro Bowler has only made it as far as the wild card. As a Saint, he wants to better that record. It’s a good thing that he will have a familiar face in charge of the Sliver and Blacks. Dennis Allen, who drafted him for the Raiders, is his head coach once more. Carr wants to prove that he is not a newcomer to the NFL anymore and is ready for the next step.
“I’m not a rookie,” the 32-year-old and 9-year veteran of the game claimed in the recent presser. “We’re always learning, and I just feel like I’m more of the quarterback I wanted to be for Allen then. Hopefully, I can be successful. It’s a big reason why I came.”
Allen is poised to begin his second season at Allegiant Stadium when they face the Denver Broncos on September 11. He knows that Carr is capable of great things for them. “Experience is the biggest thing with him,” Allen said. “He’s been through wars, and [now] he understands how pro football operates.”
Can Derek Carr lead the New Orleans Saints to NFC glory?
The Saints are always a tricky team for any NFL team to just brush off. Just ask their NFC rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, whom they have beaten 54 times over the years. If everything goes according to plan, then this season shouldn’t be any different, as per Derek Carr.
In a recent interview with SiriusXM, the veteran quarterback said he was excited for 2023. “That chip on your shoulder—when you wake up, it’s always there,” Carr told Adam Schein of NFL.com. “I remind myself; I got cut.”
The reminder that he could have asked for a trade beforehand rather than being cut from the roster haunts him to this day. It also works as a motivator to perform for the Saints.
They have good news coming through as they get closer to their week-one game. Pro Bowl wide receiver Michael Thomas is fit and ready to play. Besides, second-year playmaker Chris Olave is an exciting prospect with whom Carr can gel easily. The New Orleans Saints haven’t finished at the top of the NFC South since 2020 but are projected to win it this season.
