Former Philadelphia Eagles captain Chris Maragos recently won a civil lawsuit against his medical team for negligence over his injury, which ultimately ended his professional football career. The case was fought in the city of Philadelphia, where after three hours of discussions; the jury ordered surgeon James Bradley to pay $29.2 million and Rothman Orthopaedics Institute to pay $14.3 million.

Maragos was a safety and special teamer and played in the NFL for nine years. During the Eagles’ 2017 Super Bowl season, the 36-year-old suffered a torn posterior cruciate ligament. The doctors treated Maragos’ torn ligament but ignored the damage to his knee, which effectively ended his career.

The case saw testimony from Chris Maragos’ Eagles teammates Nick Foles, Trey Burton, and Jordan Hicks. This lawsuit highlights a serious issue within the league where the medical professionals are casual with injuries to the players. It was evident during the regular season when the Miami Dolphins medical staff allowed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to continue playing after he suffered a concussion. The staff was eventually fired, but it doesn’t eradicate the medical negligence that is present in the league.

Chris Maragos’ victory against the medical team had an effect on Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas, who made a couple of quick tweets which he deleted with the same quickness. Thomas pointed out the sloppiness of the medical staff in the NFL. Thomas wrote, “right decision. the nfl medical sucks, cheap, and uneducated their job requires barely any education or curriculum,” while replying to the news of Maragos’ lawsuit verdict.

Michael Thomas was selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. The Ohio State alum was well on track to becoming the best wide receiver in the league. He had four straight 1000-yard seasons and etched his name in a plethora of NFL records. In the 2019 season, Thomas set the record for most receptions by a wide receiver in a season with 149 catches in league history.

However, his run to being amongst the greatest wideouts was cut short by an unfortunate injury in 2020. This marked the start of his series of lower-leg injuries, which made him miss the entire 2021 season and he played only 3 games this year. Michael Thomas has a lot of issues to address between his subpar tightrope surgery on an ankle and the misdiagnosis of a toe injury.

Thomas’ injury-riddled career has caused a lot of tension between him and the Saints. The 29-year-old is expected to be a free agent this offseason but there is a high probability of the Saints restricting his contract with them and keeping a player of his caliber on the roster. Thomas did point out a serious issue that has plagued the league for years now and should be looked at by the officials because medical negligence is a huge problem that can harm the players physically and professionally.
