The Washington Commanders were under pressure to back up tackle Sam Cosmi‘s bold statement of ending the Baltimore Ravens’ “stupid” 24-game unbeaten winning streak. They saved the tackle’s blushes by doing just that and some more.

These may be preparation games for the real fight in September, but to the players, that doesn’t matter. From fights in the stands to players taunting opposition coaches, the drama keeps piling up. It’s time to add one more to that ever-growing list of highlight reels as the 2023 preseason continues to be one of the best in recent years.

Before the players even kicked the ball at FedEx Stadium, tensions were high. The Commanders were looking to show some improvement to their home fans after narrowly losing against the Browns. Second-year starter Sam Cosmi vowed to end the Ravens’ August dominance.

There were only 1:49 seconds left in the first half as the Commanders scored a touchdown. A fight broke out shortly after in the red zone as offensive lineman Nick Gates pummeled Ravens defensive back Ar’Darius Washington. Meanwhile, away from the pile of players, Cosmi could be seen giddily celebrating.

Why wouldn’t he? His team was mounting a comeback. Slowly but surely. The 24-year-old was becoming ever more confident that his words would become reality. “I think it’s a stupid record!” Sam Cosmi told the reporters, as per ESPN. “Who gives a sh** about preseason games? We’re going to beat it.”

There was no love lost between the two sides, despite the Baltimore Ravens losing by just one point as the game finished 29-28 in favor of the home side. A Joey Slye 49-yard field goal broke the Ravens’ preseason win streak since 2015. Now that honor belongs to the Las Vegas Raiders, who currently have six under their belt.

Sam Howell proved Sam Cosmi’s words correct

Cosmi may have been the catalyst for all the chatter before the game, but his teammates shared the same sentiment. Quarterback Sam Howell spoke in a similar manner after the game.

“It’s not a real game, but you want to win,” Howell said. “Especially knowing [about] their little streak.” Wide receiver Jahan Dotson chimed in as well. “I was sitting in bed watching ESPN; all you could hear about is this streak,” he said. “So I feel like we just had the biggest preseason ‘W’ in history.”

The commanders were on top of their opponents throughout the match. The Ravens played both their primary quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson, and Tyler Huntley, while lining up with backup outfielders. On the other hand, Howell was protected by a solid Commanders offensive line.
