The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly chosen Sam Darnold over Trey Lance as their backup quarterback. This news comes after they decided Brock Purdy would be their starting center. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told the flagship radio station KNBR on Wednesday that the decision was finalized on Tuesday after careful consideration. The following day, Lance did not take part in the 49ers practice session. Sources inside the facility claim they are looking at every possible option, even a possible trade.
However, Shanahan wants to keep all three of them for the upcoming season. “This isn’t a thing that we’re giving up on, Trey,” he said. The 2021 No. 3 overall draft pick missed out on the opportunity for 26-year-old Darnold, whom they signed in the offseason as an insurance policy. He’s just 21-34 as a starter during his failed stints with the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers.
Considering Lance lost out to Sam Darnold, his time in the Bay Area may be cut short. There were talks that if Purdy failed to recover in time due to his torn ulnar collateral ligament, Darnold might push Lance for some early snaps.
Nevertheless, Purdy was still the first choice as the 49ers’ primary signal-caller. His debut came in Week 2 last season when franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was carted off due to a damaged ankle. Despite being the last pick in the 2022 draft, the 23-year-old stunned the NFL with his performance. He threw for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns, and just four interceptions and reached the NFC Championship game but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. After the news went public yesterday, fans expressed their disappointment about the decision. They argue Lance deserves a chance compared to Darnold, who already has two strikes.

Social media remembers everything. So when the San Francisco 49ers announced that Sam Darnold would be their No. 2 in place of Trey Lance, they were quick to point out all the favorable picks they missed in the draft.
As eagle-eyed NFL fans pointed out, the San Francisco 49ers gave up several first-round picks to draft Trey Lance. They missed the chance to sign one of the best edge rushers in the game, Micah Parsons. He was traded three times until the Cowboys locked him up as their own. In 33 career games, Parsons has 26.5 sacks, was named All-Pro twice, and came in second in Defensive Player of the Year voting each year as well.
Then there’s Cole Strange, whom the New England Patriots signed as the 29th overall pick in 2022. Many believed that he would not be a great addition to the squad. Despite a shaky start, he started all 17 of the team’s games as a rookie. However, at the end of the day, he committed six penalties and made five sacks. As per Pro Football Focus, Strange was graded 61st overall among 77 qualified guards. Now that Sam Darnold is the second choice in San Francisco, Lance’s future is in doubt.
