The New York Giants and their star running back Saquon Barkley failed to reach a middle ground on a multi-year deal before the franchise tag deadline on Monday. He was placed under the exclusive tag back in March worth $10.091 million for the 2023 season. And now, he has dropped a massive update about his future with the Giants.
“I can’t hit the free agent market for another two years, because you could tag me twice. So if I do what I got to do this year, which I plan on doing, they could tag me again. So you could have a certain running back for a low price for seven years. And we’re the one that take the most mileage,” said Barkley in a recent episode of The Money Matters Podcast.
A lot of people expected Barkley to sit out the 2023 NFL season out of spite, but the running back is in his prime and is not going to miss out $10 million by not taking the field. Furthermore, the Pro Bowl running back understands even if he can’t sign a long-term deal in the next off-season, the Giants could still tag him for the second consecutive year, which would force Barkley to stay in New York.
Barkley would see a 20% increase in his pay if he gets tagged for a second time in 2024. Nonetheless, the talented running back just dropped that he is planning to take the field for the Giants in the upcoming season. That is massive news for the Giants’ offensive unit.

Running backs speak out against owners amidst Saquon Barkley fiasco

Apart from the Giants rusher Saquon Barkley, many other talented running backs are struggling to secure a big contract in the 2023 off-season. The Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs, who led the league in rushing yards last season, is set to play under the franchise tag in 2023.
Furthermore, Dalvin Cook, who had 4 straight Pro Bowl seasons, was released by the Minnesota Vikings a few months ago and is struggling to find a new home in free agency.
Amidst this bizarre situation, many running backs, including the Los Angeles Chargers‘ Austin Ekeler, recently spoke out against the league and demanded an answer from the owners as to why they are not paying big deals to the RBs.
Ekeler along with the Tennessee Titans‘ star RB Derrick Henry are set to become free agents following the 2023 season. Hopefully, they won’t face the same issue some of their colleagues are facing this year.
