Is running back Saquon Barkley hinting at leaving the New York Giants? His social media might indicate that Barkley may be considering terminating his contract amidst his failed extension attempt. Saquon is livid with his current employers and has removed his New York Giants player tag from all of his social media profiles as a sign of protest.
The 26-year-old is one of the brighter lights in the dark underbelly of the Giants 2022 season. Barkley was one of the standout players in his position. His heroics against the Tennessee Titans in week one, in which he rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 30 yards, earned him the offensive player of the Week award.
Naturally, Barkley hoped for a raise in his salary, and the Giants wanted to give him a long-term contract. But everything came tumbling down on the deadline of July 17th, Monday. The Giants did not offer him an extension, which Barkley had feared beforehand.
In an interview on The Money Matters Podcast from July 11, Saquon Barkley touched upon the scenario if he fails to get a new contract. “My leverage is that I could say, F*ck you’ to the Giants,” he said, according to NFL.com, and threatened to not show up for the training sessions. The two-time Pro Bowler was already placed under the dreaded franchise tag back in March.
Both parties can still negotiate a one-year deal, but a long-term solution is off the table at this point. Barkley is also eligible for the franchise tag in 2024, which would cost the Giants $22.2 million over two seasons.

ESPN’s Domonique Foxworth has some advice for Saquon Barkley
While there’s still the possibility of Saquon Barkley playing next season because of the franchise tag, he doesn’t seem willing to give in. The 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, however, still has another solution, which former player Domonique Foxworth touched upon.
“I honestly think that he should do nothing,” said Foxworth in a segment of ESPN’s Get Up. He advised Barkley that, “He should not play this season. It’s too late to get the contract he wants. He can take the $10 million for this season, which is a lot of money.” However, Foxworth claimed that the amount is too low for the output the Giants have had until now.
Foxworth claimed Barkley is a better running back than 49ers Christian McCaffrey, who is the highest-earning running back in the NFL with $16.016 million per year.
