The NFL free agency madness has begun. After the start of the legal tampering period, teams rushed to rope in the star-free agents available in the market. In that trend, the Philadelphia Eagles made a massive move to rope in the former New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley.
According to ESPN journalist Adam Schefter, Barkley has agreed to sign a massive 3-year deal with the Eagles, worth $37.75 million. This contract makes Barkley the 4th highest-paid running back in Annual Average Value ($12,583,333), just behind Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara, and Jonathan Taylor.
Previously, the Giants opted not to place Barkley under the franchise tag, which would’ve given him $12.1 million for the 2024 season. Instead, the Giants tried to reach a middle ground on a long-term extension with Barkley, which didn’t work out for them.
Barkley was drafted by the NY Giants in the first round (2nd overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. He has been a great player for them whenever he stayed healthy. In 6 seasons with the Giants, Barkley registered 5,211 rushing yards and 47 scrimmage touchdowns. Furthermore, he also registered 2 Pro Bowl seasons and won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award in his rookie season.
In 2023, he again struggled with injuries but played 14 games and registered 1,242 scrimmage yards and 10 total touchdowns. As for the Eagles, they have just got a major upgrade in the running back room after losing D’Andre Swift in free agency. Swift signed a 3-year deal with the Chicago Bears following his breakout season in 2023.
Now, Barkley will get to play behind one of the best offensive lines in the league, which would make him very lethal. The Eagles’ fans were very happy about the trade, but the same can’t be said about the New York Giants fans.
Giants fans enraged after Saquon Barkley signed with the Eagles
NFL fans on social media, especially the Giants fans, were enraged by Saquon Barkley’s signing with their division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants fans couldn’t digest seeing Barkley in Philadelphia colors.
Many Giants fans expected Barkley to leave in free agency due to salary cap issues. But not a lot of people expected him to sign with their immediate rivals. Check out some of the reactions attached below.
Nonetheless, Barkley will get to against the Giants two times a season for the next 3 years. It will be tough for the Giants fans to see him play at the MetLife Stadium wearing the Eagles green.
