Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants have finally agreed upon a contract extension for the running back, however, despite that it did not give the RB what he was looking for, a long-term extension and a commitment to stay in the Big Apple. Saquon showed up to training camp which commenced on Tuesday, it was speculated that he is likely not going to show up until September owing to frustrations with the team regarding his contract negotiations.
The New York Giants had put the franchise tag upon Saquon Barkley which would have given him $10.091 million for this year. However, after agreeing to his new extension, Saquon will now get $2M as a signing bonus and stands to get another million in the form of incentives. He stands to earn an extra million this year.

This new contract makes Saquon Barkley the third highest-paid running back heading into the 2023-24 NFL season. He tails behind Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans who makes $16.4 million a year and Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns who earns $14.9 million. This puts an end to nearly 9 months of negotiations between both sides.

Saquon Barkley is the latest victim to the league-wide issue of RBs being underpaid

Saquon Barkley did not look like he was going to cave anytime soon but appears to have done so in the best interest of his team. He has always attempted to be a team player and by reporting to training camp on time, he is setting an example for the rest of his squad to show his commitment towards them.
Another reason is that, given the state of the RB market now, the road ahead is pretty rocky and there is no guarantee that next year, the teams would be willing to pay any higher or take a chance on an RB for the long term.
In addition to that, Saquon is much better off signing this deal rather than playing on the franchise tag as he stands to make a million more this way. However, the one persisting issue is that Saquon Barkley can still be franchise tagged after the end of next season, which is bound to be disappointing to him in case it does happen. But for now, The Giants are happy and so is Saquon.
