On Sunday night, Zach Wilson and the New York Jets hosted the defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, in their Week 4 matchup. The Chiefs ended up winning the close game, but a couple of controversial calls by referees favoring Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs caused some controversy on social media. After the game, Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner fueled the fire to controversy by implying Taylor Swift’s presence at the MetLife Stadium affected the officiating on Sunday.

“Lmaoo maybe if I was a swiftie, the ref wouldn’t of threw the flag,” Gardner tweeted initially. His tweet became viral on social media, which led to the Jets cornerback toning down his complaint. Gardner edited his tweet to, “Lmaoo maybe if I was a swiftie then… nvm.”

While the tweet was edited, people could still see the old version of his post, where he openly implied that the referees favored the Chiefs due to Taylor Swift’s presence at the stadium. Gardner went ahead and deleted his entire post shortly after it went viral.

Gardner is seemingly upset about the holding penalty called on him, which negated a Patrick Mahomes interception during the final minutes of the fourth quarter. While the call was questionable, what made people angry was that the ref seemed to reach for his yellow flag only after Mahomes’ pass was intercepted. The interception could’ve changed the game in New York’s favor, but the holding call negated the pick.

Besides, that holding came just three plays after the referees failed to call a penalty on the Chiefs’ left tackle Donovan Smith, who blatantly held Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson for nearly 5 seconds, which helped Mahomes scramble for 20+ plus yards on a crucial third down and get a fresh set of downs for his team.

Sauce Gardner was left speechless by the holding call

The Jets’ All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner couldn’t find words to describe his feelings about the holding penalty, which negated a Patrick Mahomes interception on Sunday in the Chiefs-Jets week 4 game.

“I ain’t even going to lie. It’s really frustrating,” Gardner told the media after the game. “The receiver ran into me; it was a collision. The same thing was happening all game, and they didn’t throw no flags. I can’t believe that. I don’t even know what to say.”

Many NFL fans also seem to share the same sentiment as Sauce Gardner, that Taylor Swift’s presence in the game—to support her alleged boyfriend Travis Kelce—affected the officiating
