Ja’Marr Chase has set his sights on the Seattle Seahawks rookie corner, Devon Witherspoon. And the first-round pick is looking forward to the matchup, dubbing it “two good competitors going at it.”
It’s interesting how one match can change people’s perspective on a football player. After struggling through injuries during the offseason and preseason, Witherspoon would have been lucky to get some meaningful snaps under his belt. However, he is now one of the most talked-about prospects in the Seahawks camp.
The resounding display against the New York Giants turned a lot of heads. Witherspoon played both ways: outside in the base defense and inside in nickel. Witherspoon sacked the QB twice and recorded a pick-six of 97 yards to seal a 24-3 win. This was enough for the league to award him the NFC Defensive Player of the Week.
Naturally, future opponents took a keen interest in the Illinois alumnus. The Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals will collide in an exciting matchup in the next game. They finally managed to end their losing streak by beating the Arizona Cardinals. The Bengals will look to hope to build on that win in the next game.
Ja’Marr Chase displayed a headline-grabbing performance with three touchdowns and 192 receiving yards. A few days before the game, he revealed that he was always open, and Joe Burrow only had to find him. After the Cardinals game, he shared a picture of the 7-11 shopping mall, restating his claim.
However, Seahawks fourth-year receiver D.K. Metcalf claimed that Witherspoon would own Ja’Marr Chase. “Tip my hat off to him for what he has done in his first three years in the league,” Metcalf said, as per the Seattle Times. “But I think ‘Spoon will get the best of him.”

A reporter asked Chase about Metcalf’s comments regarding Devon Witherspoon. The Bengals WR took it in stride and did not mince words. He instead regarded it as one teammate backing up another.

“He ain’t doing anything but praising his teammate,” Chase said on Thursday. “At the end of the day, he’s gonna get his matchup, and we’ll see who wins.” On the other hand, Witherspoon refrained from exaggerating too much but did praise his playmaker, Metcalf. “That’s dope,” the 22-year-old said. “Shout out to DK.”
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is impressed by Devon Witherspoon’s maturity. The head coach praised Witherspoon’s ability to pick things up quickly. Caroll looks forward to using him in both ways during the Bengals game. His confidence is that, besides playing the corner, Deon will also be a great nickel.
