“We didn’t do enough,” Bills HC Sean McDermott expresses frustration towards offense following an embarrassing loss to the Patriots

The Buffalo Bills have had a rollercoaster ride this season. The team managed to upset a good team in Miami by blowing them out in Week 4 but ended up losing to teams such as the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New England Patriots in Weeks 5 and 6. The team’s head coach Sean McDermott believes that their offense is the point of concern. While there is a lot of potential there, they lack consistency.
McDermott, putting the onus of the loss on the lack of his defense, offense, and special teams being on the same page through the night said:
It's not enough, we didn't do enough. We didn't put them in position enough, I didn't put the defense in position enough and then just overall didn't play complimentary football. We were shooting ourselves in the foot at times and put in some third-and-long situations.Sean McDermott to media post loss against Patriots
That has got to be rough when you know that your offense is the reason that has cost you games that you very well could have won easily.
The concern for the Bills has been the pace at which their offense begins the game. Whenever Josh Allen gets off to a hot start early, rest assured that it is going to be a good night for Buffalo and Co. but when he begins to have turnovers early on, it is going to be a long night for the Bills.
The latter prevailed on Sunday as the quarterback threw an interception on the very first offensive play. This helped New England steer ahead and establish a comfortable 10-point lead.
Sean McDermott blames slow starts by the offense for team’s struggles
Buffalo managed to just score 3 points in the first half. In the team’s last 3 games, they have had a terrible first half in terms of scoring. The first few weeks of the season, the Bills began their games going all out and scoring significantly.
McDermott does not know what is the root cause for this.
I wish I could tell you, we talk about it, we talk about being more detailed, getting into a rhythm early, playing complementary football and all three phases working together. We have not been able to get into a good rhythm, obviously.
Allen ended the game with 265 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Buffalo found somewhat of a rhythm later on in the game and were attempting to stage a comeback, but it was just too late for that. The score was 22-10 entering the 4th quarter but Bill Belichick was not about to lose a game the day after news regarding him signing an extension as the coach of the Patriots was leaked. Mac Jones found tight end Mike Gesicki on the game-winning touchdown to put Buffalo out of reach of the score to close the game.
Following the team’s 25-29 loss to Bill Belichick and the Patriots, McDermott had this to say:
We've got to continue to find answers to some of the reasons as to why we're stubbing our toe. We're not playing complimentary football... We're beating ourselves at times and we're not linking up in all three phases to control a game.
This is not a new concern for the Bills. The team has immense potential, but it is not easy to predict if Josh Allen and the offense will click early on every night or not. Buffalo ought to be more productive on their first downs and attempt to avoid getting to a third-and-long situation at all. The Bills will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Thursday. Until then, the team has some introspection to do following their loss to the Patriots.
