The Buffalo Bills, led by quarterback Josh Allen, are currently struggling with a record of 6 wins and 6 losses, despite starting the season as Super Bowl contenders. Amidst their on-field struggles, the Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott now comes under fire for previously using a 9/11 terrorist attacks reference to motivate his players during the Bills’ training camp back in 2019.

Recently, Go Long published an article that revealed that Bills head coach used the terrorist attack to make his players understand the importance of team building and communication.

[Sean McDermott] cited the hijackers as a group of people who were all able to get on the same page to orchestrate attacks to perfection.

And then McDermott asked the Bills players to think about how the hijackers might’ve used teamwork and also about the obstacles they might’ve faced during the attacks.

And now, four years after his initial 9/11 reference, McDermott came under fire and had to apologize for his actions during a press conference on Thursday. McDermott said he regrets his action and also revealed that he immediately apologized to the team.

I want to reference the team meeting that has been brought up. My intent in the meeting that day was to discuss the importance of communication and being on the same page with the team. I regretted mentioning 9/11 in my message that day, and I immediately apologized to the team.

Furthermore, McDermott said that the 9/11 attacks were a horrible event in the country’s history. It is clear that McDermott has now understood that using such a reference to motivate his players was a bad thing. But, people are left disgusted that a football coach can do such a thing, especially one who is coaching a team that resides in Buffalo, New York.
