“Don’t kid yourself”: Sean Payton is extremely BULLISH on Jimmy Garoppolo’s performance this season

Jimmy Garoppolo could very well end up becoming the biggest underdog story of this NFL season. The veteran quarterback is in a backup role currently but nothing is certain in the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers may have opted to go with Trey Lance as their starting quarterback but we do not know if he has what it takes to take the team to the playoffs. Former Saints HC Sean Payton thinks Trey Lance does not have what it takes.

Sean Payton in a recent interview stated that he has a lot of hopes from Jimmy Garoppolo and that he will not be surprised if the vet is thrust back into the starters role midway into the season, if Trey Lance does not deliver. Jimmy G recently restructured his contract with the San Francisco 49ers, he will now be getting $6.5 million guaranteed and the amount is set to double if we take into account the incentives. Lance was not fond of this move that the 49ers made.

“We’re gonna see Garoppolo back in that lineup”: Sean Payton believes Jimmy Garoppolo will be the starter for the 49ers at the end of the season.

Jimmy Garoppolo has not put in any reps with his teammates in the offseason. Following his shoulder surgery and rehab, the quarterback was expected to be shipped out at the earliest but the tables did turn quickly. Considering there were no trade offers on the table for Jimmy, the 49ers reconsidered their stance on him and decided to retain him as a backup.

Sean Payton, however, thinks that this may have been the best offseason move the team has made. “I think there are seven or eight teams that we’re gonna see, not because of injury, we’re gonna see more than one quarterback play. I think, and I believe, don’t kid yourself, that we’re gonna see Garoppolo back in that lineup.” The former Head Coach seems pretty confident that Jimmy G will end up starting once again.

Though an experienced veteran, Garoppolo is inconsistent and cannot be trusted in situations where the game is on the line. He has not had much success in taking the team to a Super Bowl victory and his performance seems to have stagnated in terms of growth. He seems to have reached his ceiling.

Although it would not be surprising if the 49ers were to make such a move as Trey Lance is a young gun, he may have got over a million reps at practice but they will not be the same as an in-game scenario where you have defensive linemen trying to throw you down. We have heard a lot of good things about Lance but will he put his money where his mouth is or will Jimmy Garoppolo get back the reigns to his kingdom? How about you share your take on this one!
