The Denver Broncos slipped to 1-5 after their Thursday night loss against the reigning champions Kansas City Chiefs. It wasn’t a pretty game as both defenses played a stellar game. The Chiefs eventually came out on top, 19-8 at home. The Broncos had a terrible 2022 season under then-HC Nathaniel Hackett. He was replaced by former New Orleans Saints’ Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton at the beginning of the season.
Payton was expected to revive the Broncos into a contender but has failed to live up to that so far. Against the Chiefs, Payton admitted to making a mistake by calling a timeout with 22 seconds left in the first half. It was a mistake because the Chiefs were going to call a timeout of their own anyway before the Broncos’ punt. Payton also admitted to thinking it was a third down and called a TO to get an offensive play called.
“That’s a boneheaded mistake by me.” Payton told the reporters after the game. “They were calling one as well and I’m off by a down, but that was stupid.” The Chiefs offense proceeded to score a field goal after the punt. That stretched Chiefs lead to 13 points and they never relinquished that lead. Payton further said, “We played an imperfect game, but i was pleased, as I thought we had great effort and energy tonight.”
The Broncos will play their next game against the Green Bay Packers next Sunday. They will look to break this losing streak as quickly as possible. They have some tough games coming up, notably against the Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills in weeks 8 and 9 respectively.

Sean Payton ‘disappointed’ but not ‘discouraged’ with the loss to the Chiefs
The Denver Broncos‘ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday meant that they have now lost five of their six games to begin the season. They are dead last in their division and are pretty much out of playoff contention. Head coach Sean Payton, however, is not discouraged with the Broncos season although he is disappointed to lose yet another game.
“I said this (to the team) not five minutes ago that I’m not discouraged,” Payton said after the game. “I thought they played particularly hard defensively and did a great job with red zone defense, which was outstanding. Offensively, we struggled…our third down numbers were poor.”
The Broncos replaced their former head coach Nathaniel Hackett with Sean Payton this offseason. They gave up a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick to acquire his services from the New Orleans Saints. It seems like a bad trade as the Broncos continue to struggle under their new head coach.
