The Denver Broncos traded away their star outside linebacker Bradley Chubb to the Dolphins since they desperately needed a first-round pick last year. However, they might not have it till the draft because Saints’ Sean Payton might have snitched on them for possibly violating one of the NFL rules.

Sean Payton took a break from football for personal reasons after an abysmal 9-8 season with the New Orleans Saints. And now, he’s ready to be back as a head coach, but not for his old team. He’s looking to interview other teams that are interested in him. Among those interested teams, the Denver Broncos are strongly favored to land the former Super Bowl champion.

As Payton still has two years left in his contract with his old team, the teams that are looking to interview him should get permission from the Saints before they can talk to him. And also the NFL has informed all the NFL teams that they can’t have an in-person meeting with Sean Payton until January 17 as a part of their protocol.

Now, the Broncos and Payton have come under fire after the 59-year-old head coach might have accidentally snitched on himself and the Broncos on live television. The veteran coach joined Fox NFL kickoff on Sunday and talked about his future plans and revealed that the Broncos are the first team to contact him. “Denver’s the first team. I was able to have a conversation with their owner,” said Payton on Sunday.

The Broncos, who recently fired their head coach Nathaniel Hackett, had already received permission from Payton’s old team Saints to interview the veteran coach. However, the NFL has a protocol that states that the teams cannot have an in-person interview with Payton until Jan 17.

So did the Broncos commit a violation? And are they gonna lose their precious first-round draft pick which they got from Miami after trading away one of their best players? In short, no.

The Broncos and Sean Payton did not have an ‘in-person’ meeting, but just had a conversation with their owner. It could have been over a phone call or a zoom call. So the Broncos are safe for now. “Denver’s the first team. I was able to have a conversation with their owner,” Payton said on Sunday Morning. “That’s the protocol. The interview process can’t officially begin until the 17th of this month.”

Just last season, Sean Payton cost the Dolphins a first-rounder as the Miami-based franchise was fined $1.5 million and had to forfeit their 2023 first-round draft pick for tampering with Sean Payton and the seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.
