The Denver Broncos are currently preparing for their upcoming season. Under the combination of Sean Payton and Russell Wilson, Denver is hoping to make a deep postseason run and make their fans forget the awful 2022 season. Amidst this, the veteran head coach Payton gives a harsh reality check to the former Pro Bowl QB Wilson.
Payton told Wilson to start focusing more on football instead of Russell Inc. “Will you f—ing stop kissing all the babies? You’re not running for public office,” Payton said to Wilson according to ESPN.
It is no secret that the Broncos QB Russell Wilson has always cared about his public image, apart from being a good football player. But now that it affects his on-field performance, Payton wants Wilson to start focusing on the game more.
Wilson had the worst campaign of his long career during the 2022 regular season. Wilson only completed 60.5% of his passes, threw for 16 touchdowns, and had a passer rating of 84.4 last season. Those were all career worst for the former Pro Bowler. Later, it was reported that Wilson was given a bit too much free rein during his first season with the Broncos by the rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett.
Wilson allegedly brought some of his own people apart from the Broncos coaching staff and was also allowed to have a private office in the locker room according to multiple reports. Furthermore, NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt once famously said that Russell and his wife Ciara Wilson think of themselves as Jay-Z and Beyonce.
Nonetheless, Wilson, who signed an expensive deal with the Denver-based football team back in 2022, is now looking to regain his Pro Bowl form under his new mentor Sean Payton.
Russell Wilson might be playing his last year in Denver
The Denver Broncos gave up so much to acquire Russell Wilson in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks back in 2022. Furthermore, they also signed him to an expensive 5-year contract worth more than $242 million.
However, the trade went south for the Broncos really quickly and Wilson had the worst campaign in his illustrious career. That led to the Broncos finishing dead last in the NFC West despite starting the season as the Super Bowl contenders.
And now, the 34-year-old QB might be playing for his job in Denver. He is not in a hot-seat situation, but if he had a campaign similar to last season, Sean Payton might end up moving on from Wilson.
