On Sunday, Sean Payton‘s Denver Broncos were trailing 21-24 against the New York Jets. With 41 seconds left on the clock, quarterback Russell Wilson had possession of the ball and the onus to go ahead and win the game for the Mile High team.
A lot was at stake in the outcome of this game. It was not just about the win and getting the season back on track for both teams; rather, the reason behind the sudden rivalry was personal.
As soon as the ball was snapped, Jets linebacker Quincy Williams exploded past Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey, who was busy jostling with Jets’ defensive lineman Will McDonald IV. Russell Wilson, realizing the impending fourth sack of the day, took off to avoid ending the drive. However, he wasn’t able to outpace Williams, who lunged at him, and the ball rolled away close to the touchline.
Few may have thought it would go out of bounds. But charging in from the backfield was running back Breece Hall. He picked up the ball and finished a 39-yard dash to the end zone.
As the move ended and Wilson removed his helmet and head, the Broncos dug out. The CBS camera followed the veteran quarterback and captured Sean Payton, visibly angry with him.
Sean Payton addressed what happened between him and Russell Wilson
That was the game-winning moment for the New York Jets. After tasting defeats in back-to-back games, they finally managed to take home all the points as it finished 21-31. After the game, the media inquired with Sean Payton about the ‘animated’ altercation between him and Wilson.

“I don’t think I was that animated,” Payton said. “It wasn’t as big of an exchange or a big deal.” After downplaying the exchange, he claimed it was only due to the situation they were in. He only wanted to know from Wilson if he was aware that Williams was a free rusher.
It was the Broncos’ third turnover of the game, and all of it happened due to fumbles from their players. Besides the slippery hands protecting Wilson in games, this has been a massive problem for Payton. There’s no great example but the 70-20 mauling at the hands of the Miami Dolphins in week 3.
“Understanding where we are in the pocket, I think, is going to be important,” he added. “The pocket collapsed a few times. We’re going to have to offset that with the running game.”
