The Denver Broncos hired HC Sean Payton during the off-season. After a torrid 2022 NFL season, the Broncos fired then-HC Nathaniel Hackett and replaced him with Payton. Payton is a former Super Bowl-winning head coach. Payton aimed to bring the best out of star QB Russell Wilson following a difficult 2022 campaign. After two games this year, the Broncos are 0-2, and it seems Payton has yet to work his magic on Wilson.

The Broncos found it difficult to close out games this season. They failed to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter against the Las Vegas Raiders and lost that game by one point. In their second game against the Washington Commanders, the Broncos blew an 18-point lead in the second half and lost the game on a failed 2-point conversion attempt as time expired.

Payton had some interesting words for Wilson after the loss. Payton said the changing of personnel during the huddle impacted the time. He said, “We had to burn TOs in the 1st half and I’m not used to that. We have to be better. I have to be better. Russ has to be sharper with getting the play out, and then we have to look at how much we have in. If we need to wristband it, we will.”

The Broncos had a lot of intrigue surrounding them heading into this season. With a star QB in Russell Wilson and a proven HC in Sean Payton, the team was expected to be a playoff contender this year. However, after a 0-2 start, getting to the playoffs will be harder than expected.

Russell Wilson of the Broncos pulls off a late Hail Mary against the Washington Commanders

The Denver Broncos led the game on Sunday against the Washington Commanders 21-3 in the first half. After halftime, the Commanders completed a furious comeback and won 33-35. The game’s best moment occurred as time expired in the fourth quarter.

Broncos’ QB Russell Wilson heaved a moon ball from the 50-yard line as a desperate final attempt to salvage something out of the game. Players from both sides juggled the pass at the goal line before, it landed in the hands of Broncos’ WR Brandon Johnson for a fantastic touchdown. The Broncos failed to convert the subsequent 2-point attempt to tie the game and lost the game.

Wilson had a good game against the Commanders. He completed 18 of his 32 pass attempts for 308 yards and 3 TDs. Although he had a good game, his two turnovers proved costly as the Commanders capitalized on them. The Broncos will look to bounce back against the Miami Dolphins in their next game on September 24.
