On Thursday, Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos suffered a tough 19-8 loss against the defending Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs. Wilson had one of the worst performances of his career as he only registered 95 passing yards while throwing multiple interceptions. Following the game, the Broncos head coach Sean Payton took another subtle shot at his franchise quarterback.

“To win in our league you’ve got to be better throwing the ball,” Payton said after the game according to 9News.com. That seemed like a shot at the former Pro Bowl QB Russell Wilson, who completed just 13 of his 22 pass attempts for 95 yards and 0 touchdowns. Furthermore, Wilson also threw a couple of interceptions which killed any chances the Broncos had in the game.

Payton then went on the emphasize the turnovers by Wilson as one of the reasons for their loss while acknowledging the good performance from his defense. “Obviously, offensively we struggled throwing the ball. Our third-down numbers were poor. The turnovers, against a team like this — it’s going to be tough to win and yet, we were still in it going into the fourth quarter,” said Payton.

On the other hand, the veteran signal-caller Wilson also acknowledged his mistakes and took accountability for them. “Obviously, the two turnovers by me are unacceptable, they can’t happen,” Wilson said.

Despite the poor outing from Wilson, the defense kept the Broncos in the game against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs till the last few minutes. In the end, the Broncos suffered a 19-8 loss and fell to an abysmal record of 1-5 in the ongoing NFL season.

Russell Wilson has statistically been one of the best QBs in 2023

Following the disastrous 2022 campaign, the Broncos hired Sean Payton to steady the ship in Denver in the 2023 off-season. So far, the Payton experiment hasn’t been working out for the Broncos, but Russell Wilson has shown some improvement in his game.

So far through the first six weeks of the 2023 season, Wilson has 65.9 percent of his pass attempts for 1,305 passing yards and 12 touchdowns while throwing 4 interceptions. For comparison, Wilson only threw 16 touchdowns in the entire 2022 season.

So, Wilson has certainly shown a lot of improvement in his game and is playing with a goal in his mind. But the Broncos haven’t been able to see success on the field. Next, the Denver-based football team will face the struggling Green Bay Packers in their week 7 matchup next weekend.
