In sports, at times there can be no conclusive end to a debate that arises between two fans. Some debates, such as the Michael Jordan or LeBron James GOAT debate, Shannon Sharpe or Tony Gonzalez, Tom Brady or Joe Montana, always leave fans with a split opinion. When it comes to the greatest wide receivers, fans remain divided between Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, and Terrell Owens.

Sharpe is a Jerry Rice fan through and through. However, Chad Johnson, his co-host on Nightcap Show, believes Randy Moss and Terrell Owens were by far the most talented receivers to play in the NFL.

Jerry Rice is the GOAT based on the numbers. Randy Moss and TO are the greatest receivers to play in the history of this game.

The former wideout based his opinion on skills and talent, he kept numbers out of the equation.

Forget the numbers...I hate this number game. When it comes to talent and skillset, Randy Moss and TO clear every fu***** body...Jerry is great and all but there's just something about Moss and TO that I cannot put into words.

Owens and Moss were elite and had an important role to play in the evolution of the wide receiver position.

However, Jerry Rice became great in a period where teams preferred to run the ball more. Shannon Sharpe could not believe Johnson’s opinion on this topic and said,

Did you not see Jerry? Jerry has 7,000 more yards than Moss, 44 more touchdowns, he has 600 more catches than Moss...you play a sport that numbers matter.

He was of the opinion that you cannot disregard numbers while determining who the greatest wideout of all time is. It is very much relevant. Sharpe has Rice as the greatest ever to play his position because his stats eclipse both Moss’ and Owens’ career accomplishments.

Rice broke several records, many of which remain untouched to this day. He was truly ahead of his time.

While Johnson does have a point when he states that the sole focus while determining the greatest player of all time should not be placed on numbers alone, it becomes difficult to disregard stats completely. Ultimately, it is the most stable metric that acts as a clear basis to make comparisons on.
