It’s hard to imagine Patrick Mahomes playing for any other team besides the Kansas City Chiefs. But Shannon Sharpe posed the question: if the Baltimore Ravens had signed the former Texas Tech man, would he still be as successful?
In a recent segment of Sharpe’s Nightcap podcast with co-host Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson, the Hall of Fame tight end asked Johnson his take on Mahomes playing for the Ravens. Ocho remarked that it would be the same as Lamar Jackson playing for the Chiefs, which shocked Sharpe. This meant that Jackson would have at least won one Super Bowl ring.
Ain't nothing wrong with that. Lamar [Jackson] is dynamic in his own right. Yeah, offensively, they would be a different dynamic. It would be a different offensive dynamic.Johnson said
To back up his argument, the former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver compared both the Chiefs and Ravens offensive coaching staffs. Jackson spent his first year learning from offensive coordinator Todd Monken, bagging his second NFL MVP. But Ocho stated that the ex-Louisville QB would be successful and then some if he was playing under Andy Reid in Kansas.
Johnson added:
Can you imagine Lamar Jackson and motherf*** Andy Reid? You thought about how Picasso was creative in what he did, and then you imagine Lamar with Andy Reid.
Sharpe chimed in with a valid point, questioning Ocho’s hypothesis.
So you're saying It's not Patrick Mahomes, but Andy Reid?
Johnson had to take a step back but wasn’t ready to accept that his argument did not have much depth. He switched tracks and claimed that Patrick Mahomes would be great on any of the 31 teams if he hadn’t signed with the Chiefs.
Patrick Mahomes predicted his future in a viral letter
It’s hard to predict the future because of the numerous variables that an individual goes through in their life. But Mahomes knew what he would bring to the franchise that would select him in the draft. The 28-year-old wrote an open letter to every head coach of an NFL team about his commitment and mentality for the game of football.
For months now, I've been answering your questions to the best of my ability. I am walking you through my game tape, reciting plays back to you. You've watched me run, jump, lift weights, and throw the ball as far as I can.Mahomes wrote, as per the Players Tribune
Not only that, he honestly expressed not promising to win every single game. But gave his word on learning the playbook as thoroughly as possible.
I won't retire with a perfect passer rating or zero career interceptions. But I'll try as hard as anybody. I'm ready to start the journey to a championship. [And], more than anything else, I'm ready to suit up and play some football
The Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes as the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. To date, he has played 96 games, winning 74 and losing only 22, completing 2386 passes for 28,424 passing yards, 219 touchdowns, and 63 interceptions. He has three Super Bowls, won Super Bowl MVP on three occasions, twice NFL MVP, twice All-Pro, and six Pro Bowls.
