Patrick Mahomes and Tiger Woods may have chosen to play different sports in different eras, but their greatness breaches that gap, making them equal, according to Shannon Sharpe. The retired football player turned analyst predicts that the Chiefs quarterback will once again produce an MVP season.
“I’m taking Mahomes. Mahomes is Tiger Woods in his prime at the Masters,” Sharpe told Stephen A. Smith on his first appearance on ESPN’s First Take. “No one would ever be the favorite over Tiger at the Masters [when he was in his prime], and no one should be the favorite over Patrick Mahomes, because we saw what he did last year.”
The 27-year-old had another scintillating campaign last year, going 14-3 in the regular season and throwing 5250 yards and 41 touchdowns en route to his second Super Bowl ring. He led the NFL in total yards by a quarterback in one season. All that without one of his primary playmakers being absent from the Chiefs’ roster.
“You took away arguably the most dangerous receiver, the most dangerous player in the NFL, in Tyreek Hill,” Sharpe pointed out. “What does he do? Wins the league MVP and the Super Bowl MVP. He just did it in a different way.”
Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins prior to the start of the 2022 season. The Mahomes and Hill duo played a key role in the Chiefs’ 2019 Super Bowl victory. Many predicted that it would cost the Kansas franchise dearly, but Mahomes figured out other ways to win.
Can Patrick Mahomes put up another MVP season?
The Texas Tech alumnus was already a legend at the college level, and that buzz carried over to the NFL Draft. His first-round pick was enough to convince everyone that Patrick Mahomes could turn out to be special. The Chiefs roster was coming off some decent performances, and his addition only helped catalyze their push for a Super Bowl.
But it’s the second title in three years, a testament to how well the Pro Bowler can adapt to change despite producing less positive results. With Hill on the team, Mahomes completed more successful passes than he threw interceptions. In 2018, he threw interceptions at a rate of 2.1 percent, which trimmed down to just one percent the following two years. However, after Cheetah’s departure, it went back up to 1.9 percent.
Fortunately for Patrick Mahomes, he will have an elite forward line at his disposal in 2023. Five-year veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling and the league’s best tight end, Travis Kelce, will be there to support him.
