Chaos erupted at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday night when Jameis Winston and the New Orleans Saints chose to ignore head coach Denis Allen‘s commands against the Atlanta Falcons. Winston was in for the final play of the game when the score was 40-13 for the Saints.

After the 2-minute warning, Allen called for a kneel, but the quarterback and the rest of the Saints crew had other ideas. Instead of heeding the coach’s call, Winston faked taking a knee and threw the ball to running back Jamaal Williams for a touchdown.

The Atlanta Falcons head coach, Arthur Smith, did not take that too kindly and wrapped up in a verbal altercation with Allen. It was the final time fans saw Smith in Atlanta colors as the franchise fired him after the game.

A day later, former NFL tight end and current ESPN analyst Shannon Sharpe claimed that Winston and the other Saints players did not listen because Allen had lost the locker room.

It makes Dennis Allen look like he has lost control of that locker room.
the Hall of Famer said on First Take from the sidelines of the college football final venue, NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas

Then Sharpe turned his gaze to Winston. He blasted the 30-year-old for not listening to Allen’s orders.

I'll say this: I would cut Jameis Winston today. I would not want him on my team. That's a loser mentality. There's a mentality that you have to have if you want to play winning football. Jameis Winston has a loser mentality. That's why he didn’t win in Tampa. That's why Tom Brady came there, took the same team, and went to the Super Bowl.

Jameis Winston said he had no regrets about ignoring Dennis Allen’s call

Winston has been in Louisiana since 2020, so he knows how the team works. So when Dennis Allen called for “victory,” which means taking a knee, his first call to action was answering the head coach’s wishes. But he wanted Williams to score a touchdown because the 2022 NFL rushing touchdown (17) leader did not have any in the 2023 season.

My intention was to lead the team that I've been with the entire year.
Winston told the reporters after the game
We made a collective decision that we wanted to give one of our guys, who fight with blood, sweat, and tears every game, into the end zone. And I'm going to feel good about that.

It was the last game for the Saints this season. Allen’s team finished the same as their NFC South rivals, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-8). But the Buccaneers qualified for post-season football because of their head-to-head record.
